NFL player Cedric Benson killed in motorcycle crash
NFL running back Cedric Benson, 36, was one of two people killed in a motorcycle crash in West Austin on Saturday, report our partners at KUSA.
A former Longhorn at the University of Texas, Benson went on to play professionally with the Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, and Green Bay Packers.
At approximately 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Austin police, fire, and EMS responded to reports of a motorocycle and car crash on RM 2222 at the 5600 block of Mount Bonnell Road.
Benson and a woman in her 30s were declared dead at the scene. Two others had non life-threatening injuries.
Police said Benson and a woman were on a motorcycle heading down RM 2222 when a minivan pulled out of Mount Bonnell Road and hit them. Police said speed and poor visibility were the biggest factors in the crash.
Benson was a four-year starter for the Texas Longhorns football team and received the Doak Walker Award as the country’s top running back in 2004, according to KUSA. He was a consensus All-American.
In the 2005 NFL Draft Benson was drafted fourth overall by the Chicago Bears, signing a five-year, $35 million contract.
In September 2008 Benson went on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals, where he stayed until 2012 when he signed with the Green Bay Packers.
