National bike race met with praise from some locals
Residents in Hanover say they’re excited about a national bike race happening on Thursday in front of their homes.
“Having those kind of people learn more and experience what we experience every day can only be a good thing out here,” said Larry Obermesik, who lives in front of Myers road.
The USA Cycling Masters Road Nationals are holding their four race events in Colorado Springs, with the two timed trials taking place on Myers road. The competition is forcing closures on the road between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday.
Nearby residents who wish to travel on the road to leave or get to their home will need a motorcycle escort.
“A little bit of discomfort for an awesome thing,” said Obermesik regarding the closures.
On Facebook, residents in Hanover have voiced concerns about the bike race affecting their commute. But Thorsten Kretschmar, who also lives on Myers road, said there’s no reason to complain.
“I think it’s great,” he said. “It’s only going to be for a day, it ain’t like it’s going to be an every day ordeal. I’m good with that.”
Dan Nutzer, who was visiting from Virginia and training for the race, said he appreciates the patience of those affected by the championship.
“We thank them for playing host to this event,” Nutzer said. “This is a very important event in amateur cycling and it’s very gracious of them to allow us to race here.”
