Black Friday for Hunters: Leftover license day draws big crowd

It’s like Black Friday, but for big game hunters. Tuesday, people could go online or head over to a Colorado Parks and Wildlife office and purchase a leftover license for hunting season.

Every year on the first Tuesday in August, leftover day takes place. This year, more than 54,000 licenses were available for purchase after the spring draw.

Cody Wigner with CPW said the licenses include game like elk, deer, pronghorn, bear, and moose.

“Moose, good luck finding that on the leftover list but mostly elk, deer, and bear,” Wigner said.

Taylor Bost, didn’t draw a tag this spring, so he says he’s grateful for this opportunity to be able to come in and pick up a leftover deer tag.

“I was little pessimistic going into this, but I got one tag and I will probably be looking for some over-the-counter tags on Thursday as well,” said Bost.

And like Taylor mentioned, if you missed out on today and could not get a ticket then you’re not out of luck yet. On Thursday, you can come in and purchase an over the counter license.

Wigner said, “Over the counter licenses go on sale at 9 a.m. A lot of those are unlimited, meaning unlimited in the number of licenses we give out. But most people can get one of those licenses.”

CPW will continue to sell leftover licenses until they run out, but they are going fast, so make sure to either come in or buy one online.
