Colorado Springs woman starts petition to change name of Trump Ave
A Colorado Springs woman has started a petition to change the name of Trump Ave, a neighborhood off Bijou street, to Immigrant Ave.
Nina Ellis Frischmann posted the petition on Change.org three days ago (www.change.org/p/mayor-john-suthers-change-the-name-of-trump-ave-to-immigrant-ave). Right now, the petition has more than 300 signatures.
Frischmann says the idea actually started as part of a game. She and her friends are taking part in the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt (GISH), an event created by actor Misha Collins from the series Supernatural. One of the items on the list is to try and change the name of a street sign that represents a racist, a war criminal, or a derogatory term.
Frischmann says she believes the actions of President Trump and his administration are racist. Some of the people who live on Trump Ave agree. “I can’t say specifically that the man is racist. What I can say is that his verbiage and what he represents is racist,” said Debora Callan. Callan went on to say, “We can do better, we can change it, we can rise above it.”
Meanwhile, other residents disagree. Bob Fox says he does not stand with the petitioners. “Trump, a racist? No, I don’t go along with that at all. Fox says he supports the president: “I do applaud our president, Trump, so I’d like to see it stay the way it is.”
Frischmann has yet to file the petition through the City to make the proposal legitimate, but she says she plans to do so later this week.
