Two paratroopers killed during combat operations in Afghanistan
The 82nd Airborne Division is confirming that two paratroopers were killed Monday during combat operations in Afghanistan.
The soldiers, who have not yet been identified, were with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The BBC is reporting that an Afghan soldier opened fire on the paratroopers in an apparent “insider attack” in the Kandahar province.
Miliary.com reports that these latest deaths bring the 2019 total to 15, which now matches the total for 2018. They’re also the second and third service members to die in Afghanistan this month alone. On July 13, Sgt. Maj. James Sartor was killed by enemy small arms fire. Sartor, 40, was a Green Beret and was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group out of Fort Carson. A funeral service was held on July 27 at the Air Force Academy Chapel.
