Colorado postal inspector recommends installing surveillance cameras after package thefts
The Colorado postal inspector advised local homeowner associations to install surveillance cameras near mailbox buildings after reports of stolen packages.
Residents at “The Farm” community in Northern Colorado Springs said some of them have been on high alert after instances of disappearing packages.
“Supposedly late at night we’ve had individuals coming in and taking packages and mail from the mailboxes,” said Bruce Ballenger, who is a resident at “The Farm.”
Dante Passalacqua, who also lives in Northern Colorado Springs, says at least three packages of his have been stolen in the past two months.
“I was hoping to bring to light this issue as it is a growing problem in our community,” said Passalacqua in an email to KRDO. “Mail theft is serious and deserves to be treated as so.”
Eric Manuel, the postal inspector for Colorado, said surveillance cameras can be a great way for members of the Home Owners Association to help investigations of mail theft in residences.
“That footage is very useful for inspectors to investigate these postal crimes,” Manuel said.
Manuel also said the best way to have the U.S. Postal Service and law enforcement investigate mail theft is to call the 24/7 postal inspector hotline at 877-876-2455. You can find more information at https://www.uspis.gov/.
