2nd Democratic debate could determine Former Gov. Hickenlooper’s candidacy
For the second time this summer, Democrat presidential hopefuls are returngin to the debate stage.
Former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper is the among the first 10 who will debate Tuesday night. In the first debate in June, he didn’t say much that resonated with the American public.
In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Tuesday afternoon he said, “I think I have to show more of who I am.”
Blitzer was quick to bring up the former governor’s place among the other candidates.
“I was at 2% last week, just, so we’re clear,” said Hickenlooper.
Blitzer interrupted saying, “just 1% or 2%, but there are still others who are way ahead of you.”
His lag behind the others is clear in the polls and on social media.
In the four days following the first debate, Hickenlooper’s interactions on social media showed him in 21st place out of 25 candidates.
Within the last week Hickenlooper has seen a slight increase in his social media ranking, hitting 17th place, but still not cracking the top 10 candidates.
Given his slow presidential campaign, it’s been suggested that Hickenlooper instead set his sights on the U.S. Senate and run against incumbent Senator Cory Gardner.
When Blitzer asked the former governor if he’s considered a different race, he responded, “I am 100% focused on being President. The moment I start entertaining questions about my future in business or running for Senate, whatever, I lose focus and my staff loses focus.”
Ultimately, what Hickenlooper says tonight will determine if he makes his mark on the American public.
Colorado Senator Michael Bennet will take the debate stage Wednesday night with the remaining candidates.
