Columbine High School will not be demolished
The Jefferson County School District has decided not to tear down and rebuild Columbine High School.
This decision comes after a June survey was distributed to the JeffCo community to gauge interest in a $60 – $70 million renovation project. The project proposal came after JeffCo security encountered a record number of attempted unauthorized entries to school property from those fascinated by the 1999 mass shooting.
In a letter to the community Monday, Glass announced that based on the survey results, he does “not believe there is sufficient support to move forward with a proposal to rebuild the school.”
“The ensuing discussion both locally and joined by those around the country, was emotional and complex,” said Glass in the statement. “I want to express my appreciation and gratitude for the honest, respectful, and civil way these discussions took place in the Columbine and larger Jeffco communities.”
Final plans for the property have yet to be determined. The school will proceed with other scheduled renovations cropwithout funds from the district’s $15 million renovation bond.
JeffCo will continue to fund Columbine’s extra security and privacy measures from existing district resources.
