Former Costilla County deputy arrested for smuggling contraband
The Costilla County Sheriff’s Office says one of its former detention deputies is now facing criminal charges and was arrested Friday.
CCSO says 80-year-old Joseph Claude Harpe was “arrested without incident after a lengthy investigation” for two counts of introduction of contraband, first-degree official misconduct, and harassment.
No other details have been given yet, but Harpe is no longer a detention deputy in Costilla County. It’s not clear if he was allegedly smuggling items into the jail or into another area.
The sheriff’s office says there’s no danger to the public and that more information will be available at a later time.
