Colorado, New Mexico govs. debate over Pueblo and Hatch chiles

Gov. Jared Polis is going to battle for one of southern Colorado’s most revered commodities: the Pueblo Chile.

Polis and New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham have been participating in a war of words over which state has the better Chile: the Hatch Chile or Pueblo Chile.

In a Facebook post, Polis called the New Mexico Chile inferior, and praised Pueblo’s Chile. Grisham responded on twitter claiming the Hatch Chile’s are the greatest in the world.

Wednesday, Polis called for a chile taste off in Trinidad on Twitter.

The Pueblo Chile Growers Association supports Polis’ call for a chile taste-off. They’ve even sent a formal invitation for a showdown between the two governors in Trinidad or at the 25th annual Pueblo Chile and Frijoles Festival later this year.

“In the last few years a chile taste-off has been asked for more and more,” said Donielle Gonzales with the Pueblo Chile Growers Association.

Gonzales says there hasn’t been an official chile taste-off between the two states, and it is about time they put the debate to rest.

“We think the best taste-off would be the roasted pepper itself with a little bit of garlic salt,” said Gonzales. “If you put it in a dish, like the green chile sauce that we all know and love in Pueblo, there are so many variables that happen.”

“I appreciate Governor Polis having our back,” said RoseAnn DiSanti of DiSanti Farms.

DiSanti believes Pueblo and its chiles are up to the challenge.

“I think a taste-off would be great, bring it on!” said DiSanti. “I love the debate. I just think it’s fun. I don’t think there is any animosity, it’s a friendly rivalry. The people of New Mexico love their chile just like the people in Colorado love the Pueblo chile.”

As of Thursday, a chile taste-off in Trinidad, or anywhere else, is still up in the air.

The post that started it all:

New Mexico responds:

If Pueblo chile were any good, it would have been on national shelves before now. If Colorado wants to go chile to chile, no question that New Mexico can bring the heat – Hatch chile is, has always been and will always be the greatest in the world. https://t.co/zBkkUPJPxL

I agree with @GovMLG on a lot of things, but we disagree on this one. I challenge @GovMLG to a chile taste-off in Trinidad! Let’s put this to the test. https://t.co/xIh3PWE8Gy
