Wildfire burns in terrain northwest of Canon City

A wildfire started Tuesday northwest of Canon City and continued to grow up the rough terrain Wednesday, but firefighting crews have so far only been able to attack the blaze from the air.

The Canon Lands Fire burned about 25 acres in an area nine miles northwest of Canon City as of 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire is still zero-percent contained, but no structures were threatened. The fire started making short runs up a hill to the west throughout the afternoon.

A helicopter is dropping flame retardant on the fire, but ground crews are still working on establishing communication lines, escape routes, and safety zones before they begin the firefighting efforts on foot.

No injuries have been reported at this time, and the exact origin of the fire isn’t yet clear, though it’s suspected to be lightning-caused.

The Bureau of Land Management says the flames are currently not a threat to any structures.
