UPDATE: Baby dropped off at fire station in Canon City

A baby boy is recovering after being taken to a fire station in Canon City Tuesday morning.

We don’t know how long the baby was alone, but the Canon City Police Department confirmed that the baby was taken to Fire Station 1 Tuesday morning.

According to police, a teenager told firefighters at the station that he had found the baby abandoned. He then admitted that the baby is his, and police were also able to confirm that his girlfriend is the baby’s mother.

Despite the initial lie, this is still a successful use of the Colorado Safe Haven Law. This allows parents to surrender newborns anonymously to a fire station or hospital as long as the infant is less than three days old.

“They can come to the station drop their child off, give them any information they can possibly muster, and they can walk away,” said Lt. Shane Roberts with the Canon City Fire Department. “The whole idea behind the law is to give a safe place, to drop off their child off. To keep them from doing something dastardly with the child out of panic.”

Roberts says this is the first instance of a Safe Haven Law being utilized at a Canon City Fire Department since the law was put in place.

The baby and the mother are currently in good health, according to police.

The baby is currently in the care of the Fremont County Department of Human Services.

Police say they investigated and determined that there was no criminal activity.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story said a witness reported that a teenager found the baby abandoned at a home in Canon City. CCPD investigated and determined that the infant wasn’t abandoned at a vacant home.
