Pueblo activists join national protest against migrant camps
Nearly 50 men and women flooded Pueblo streets Tuesday chanting, “close down the camps!”
They joined a national protest movement urging President Donald Trump and their local lawmakers to take stand against them.
Similar movements took place all over the country one day after lawmakers visited facilities in Texas reporting inhumane conditions.
New York State Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said, “these women were being told by CBP officers to drink out of the toilet.”
Pueblo Protestor Tziavii Stevens says, “children are dying so that doesn’t sit well with any of us.”
New pictures from the Department of Homeland Security show conditions in facilities are crowded, with many men and women standing in a tight area.
It’s prompted President Donald Trump to sign a bill that gives millions of dollars in funding for the facilities.
For some protestors, that’s not enough.
Joan English, another activist marching today said, “these camps are real. They’re unconscionable and they can be solved if lawyers and judges go there and clear out the asylum seekers.”
The protests consisted of three different advocacy groups including Pueblo Indivisible, Pueblo Activism Exchange and Faith Leaders in Action.
Stevens says the groups are planning their next event for July 12th.
