Firefighters respond to multiple flood rescue calls in Pueblo

Street flooding brought traffic to a crawl or worse on quite a few roads across the region on Monday, especially those in Pueblo and Fremont counties.

Waist high water flooded the streets of Pueblo, damaging cars or getting them stuck at intersections. The Pueblo Fire Department says it responded to eight flood-related calls.

One of them was on Abriendo Avenue and Central Avenue. It was a sedan carrying two adults and three children.

Firetrucks and ambulances arriving to check on the family after Vanessa Hanes the mother says they were waiting for nearly half an hour.

Hanes tells us her husband thought they could make it through the water when they got stuck. Things got worse when the water started pouring in.

“They were a little scared especially when the water started coming into the vehicle,” Hanes says.

Everyone turned out to be okay. But they weren’t the only ones who got stuck at that intersection.

Another man’s car, this time an SUV was not able to get through.

It wasn’t just flooding the storm brought, strong winds damaging roofs of buildings and a tree was struck by lightning causing it to crash onto the street.

The flood also caked sidewalks with mud and brought tons of trash along with it that now litters the streets. Crews already getting to work on cleaning up.

The Fire Department says the best way to avoid flooding situations is to simply follow the motto: Turn around, don’t drown.
