UPDATE: Suspect dead after standoff in Patty Jewett area
UPDATE: Colorado Springs Police Sgt. Gilman says the unidentified suspect was found dead inside a home along Wahsatch.
His death is still under investigation.
This comes after two crashes and an hours-long standoff near the Old North End of Colorado Springs.
The first crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. on E. San Miguel Street. A silver Honda Civic crashed into a pole near a house and ended up in the yard. The car is believed to be stolen.
Homeowner Mike Cassell, whose home was almost hit because of the crash, told KRDO that a man left the car on foot carrying bags from inside. The man allegedly told the homeowner to “call 911”.
Cassell says, “they definitely need to find him because if he could do this and walk away, he could definitely do it again.”
He was believed to be armed with a gun before making his way toward Wahsatch and Caramillo Street.
Multiple neighbors reported the man then stole a second vehicle, a white pickup truck, and crashed it as well.
Linda Buffetti who was in her garden at the time said, “he was just driving out of control and then I heard a crash.”
Colorado Springs police say the man made his way inside a stranger’s home and barricaded himself for hours.
Police used a drone and robotic device to surveil the house before eventually going in to find him dead.
Sgt. Gilman said this incident and the hit and runs are still under investigation.
