Stolen car caught on red light camera

A stolen car was returned to its rightful owner after a camera caught the suspect, James Whitmire, running a red light.

A few weeks ago, a Colorado Springs citizen was surprised to receive a citation for running a red light at the intersection of Platte Avenue and Chelton Road, reports CSPD.

The resident brought their citation into the Municipal Court where they informed authorities that their car had been stolen the morning before the violation.

CSPD was able to confirm the vehicle had been reported stolen and pulled the “Photo Red Evidence Packet” which showed another individual driving the vehicle. Officers were soon able to identify the suspect as Whitmire. Detectives located Whitmire at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center, where he admitted in an interview to being the person in the red light camera photo.

Whitmire was arrested for Felony Motor Vehicle Theft and the rightful owner had his red light violation dismissed.
