Students predicted Mitchell High School teacher’s arrest
A former Mitchell High School student is speaking out after her math teacher was arrested for alleged sexual contact with another student.
According to the arrest documents, Armando Grez tried to entice a 17-year-old student on multiple occasions, even offering good grades in return for explicit photos.
But another former student of his, Haiven Berry, says his behavior was well documented by herself and other students.
“It’s disgusting. I wasn’t too surprised by it. Just knowing him and how he acted around me and my friends, someone kind of predicted it,” she said.
The papers state Grez reportedly kissed and groped the girl on multiple occasions, sometimes he would take her to a movie or out to eat.
Berry says Grez frequently blurred the boundaries between teacher and student.
“With Mr. Grez, he would have a student go out and buy him lunch with his credit card and it’s just not right,” Berry said.
She admits she also felt victimized by Grez and believes there may be others.
“He saw that I doodled in class and stuff. He offered me to come out on my time after school into his classroom just me and him and do art for him,” Berry said.
Grez had been a math teacher at Mitchell High School for nearly a year.
“You’re going to risk everything on a child, on a girl who is under 18,” Berry said.
According to those arrest documents Grez carried on with that behavior despite being in a committed relationship with an adult woman who he planned to marry. Grez now faces a felony charge of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.
