Metal detectors installed at Colorado Springs City Hall
Colorado Springs city officials are increasing security at City Hall with the installation of two metal detectors.
One detector is inside the ground-floor entrance, and the other is inside the second-floor entrance. A security guard is on duty at each location.
City Councilwoman Jill Gaebler said the council carefully discussed and considered the installation of the devices.
“We have some facilities people who worked with the police department,” she said. “They did a report on deficiencies within city buildings, as far as potential threats are concerned. They did come before the council and tell us that not having some sort of security at the entrances was a potential threat.”
Gaebler said the decision wasn’t easy.
“We want City Hall to be the people’s house. We want people to feel welcome. But it’s the smart thing to do.”
City officials said they have no plans to install metal detectors in other city buildings. The Municipal Court building next to City Hall already has metal detectors. The City Administration Building has a police desk where visitors are required to check in and employees must show ID.
