Fountain Police Department runs active shooter training inside elementary school

The Fountain-Fort Carson School District is making sure they are prepared for emergencies — for the fourth year in a row, they participated in three different scenarios with Fountain police, including an active shooter situation.

Geri Reble, a police and school resource officer, has been involved with an active shooter before. She responded to the shootings at New Life Church and Planned Parenthood.

“Think about Highland, you know what, two weeks ago? When they had that school shooting up there and that student gave his life to save others. It’s very true, it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when,” said Reble.

Tony Greco, principal of Carson Middle School, says this training is difficult but needed.

“The training and the partnership that we are building here at District 8 with the police, it makes you rest a little bit better because you actually have people who you know are in it with you that are thinking about it all the time,” said Greco.

More than one training exercise was held today. Also taking place, a student threatening self-harm and a dispute in the front office with a gun. Having an active shooter is an important situation, but not nearly as prominent as a mentally distraught student.

“We probably don’t go a day without getting a Safe2Tell tip about a suicidal student,” said Reble.

And because of incidents like the few shown Wednesday, District 8 has at least one resource officer in every school.
