Dead colt found dumped on the side of road in El Paso County
A 6-month-old horse was found dead in El Paso County Monday. It had a noose around its neck and law enforcement still don’t have any suspects.
The woman who found the colt calls it heartbreaking, and as a horse owner, herself, she says she can’t understand why someone would dump its body on the side of Slocum Road.
“We noticed the colt on the side of the road, and we immediately turned around, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,'” said Allie Knar.
Knar found the grey colt was dead with a noose around its neck.
“He was laying up here in the grass, and he had the rope around his neck and there were no signs of trauma or anything but I told my mom it’s a baby horse. Who would dump a baby horse on the side of the road?” said Knar.
The case is even leaving the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office with questions.
“Nobody knew of any colt, nobody claimed ownership of the colt, so we don’t have a lot of option when that’s the case,” said Jackie Kirby, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.
She tells us the animal humane society will not be conducting a necropsy test to find out the cause of death.
“If anybody has information, please give law enforcement a call. Just because we don’t have any suspect information doesn’t mean that somebody may not know something,” Kirby said.
For Knar, it’s disheartening to know someone may have dumped the body on purpose.
“I was concerned that it may have been stolen because it was a Grulla and that is a very uncommon color,” she said.
Law enforcement is asking anyone with surveillance video to watch it and report anything suspicious.
