Marty’s Saturday Morning Forecast – Breezy/Windy At Times – 5/25/19
Today: Mostly sunny this morning, partly cloudy and breezy to windy at times this afternoon with wind speeds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to around 30 mph at times. Temperatures will be similar to yesterday with afternoon highs in the 60s and 70s along and west of I-25 and lower 80s for the plains. Low level moisture may support isolated severe thunderstorms near the Kansas state line, mainly along and east of US highway 287 from roughly Eads southward through Lamar and Springfield. Should thunderstorms develop over our eastern most counties this afternoon any stronger cells will be capable of producing large hail, damaging wind gusts and tornadoes. Clouds will build up over and near the mountains and isolated sprinkles or brief showers could develop, but they’ll be few and far between.
Tonight: Strong to severe thunderstorms will remain possible over our far eastern counties early this evening until they drift into Kansas while the rest of the area remains dry. The wind will gradually wind down through the night with a mostly clear sky expected over the mountains. Areas of low cloud cover and possibly even some showers are possible over the plains, especially east of I-25 after midnight. Low temperatures should fall into 30s for the mountains with mainly 40s to lower 50s for the plains , warmest over the far eastern plains.
Sunday: Any early low clouds over the plains will give way to a partly cloudy sky. The air will be warmer with spotty, weak/brief showers possible over and near the mountains during the afternoon. Once again isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible over the plains during the afternoon and evening hours. Strong storms Sunday afternoon may occur a little farther west as compared to Saturday, but they’ll likely remain mainly east of highway 71 from Limon to La Junta. A stout wind will develop over many areas during the afternoon with speeds of 15 to 25 mph again likely; gusts Sunday afternoon will range from 30 to 40 mph at times. High temperatures should reach the upper 70s to upper 80s for the plains with 60s over the mountains.
Extended: Memorial Day looks a little cooler, windy and dry across the area with high temperatures in the 70s to lower 80s for the plains, mainly 60s over the mountains. The air should cool noticeably Tuesday with high temperatures falling into the 40s and 50s around the Pikes Peak Region, 50s and 60s along and south of the Arkansas River. The wind will remain pretty strong on Tuesday and there will be a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms (possibly even a little morning snow on the higher terrain) over mainly northern and western parts of our coverage area through Tuesday night. Wednesday may remain a bit cool but the air should warm gradually through the rest of next week with Friday looking to be the warmest day with high temperatures possibly reaching the 80s to lower 90s for the plains. We’ll continue to be windy at times, and we’ll expect mainly spotty afternoon and evening shower and thunderstorms to be possible for various areas each day.
