Colorado Secretary of State pushes for boycott of Alabama
In response to the Alabama state government signing a strict anti-abortion measure into law, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold says she’s restricting Department of State employees’ travel to the southern state.
Griswold said in a statement Thursday that “Until the laws of Alabama allow for safe and legal access to health care for women, we call on the Election Center to move the location of its trainings from Alabama.”
Department employees regularly travel to Auburn, Alabama to attend a training and certification program for election registration administrators.
Griswold is calling on the Election Center to move that training program out of Alabama, and she says she’s not authorizing any state resources to travel to Alabama for that training or any other purpose.
It’s all in response to a sweeping abortion ban that was signed into law by Alabama’s governor this week. The law makes performing an abortion punishable by law, even in the cases of rape or incest.
“This restrictive law, which does not even allow exceptions for incest and rape, is appalling. We should not spend Colorado state resources in a state that restricts women’s basic rights to health care. I call on other state and local leaders in Colorado and across the country to join me in this boycott,” Griswold said in a statement.
