Hailed a hero: Student shot, killed during school attack lunged at shooter

When a student opened fire on classmates at STEM Academy in Highlands ranch, many students jumped into action.

Kendrick Castillo was one of those who lunged on the gunman trying to stop him, though he was shot and killed in the process.

Now his fellow classmates are thanking him, saying he’s the reason they’re able to be at home with their families.

But it’s undeniable there’s one family missing a big part of their lives, and that’s Kendrick’s family. His father spoke out on the tragedy Wednesday.

“I know that because of what he did, others are alive today. Thank God for that. I love him and he’s a hero. He always will be,” said John Castillo, Kendrick’s father.

Though Kendrick wasn’t alone. Other students and their families are crediting him for saving their lives.

“Kendrick lunged at him to try to subdue him as soon as he said don’t you move. Giving all of us enough time to hide under our desk,” Nui Giasolli said.

“If it had not been for him I wouldn’t have my baby today. I couldn’t imagine. I will never be able to thank him. I have no words other than what a hero,” said Nyki, Giasolli’s mom.

Three other young men have also been praised for their heroism.

One of them being Brendan Bialy, who was in the Marines’ Delayed Entry Program. The Marines have since applauded him for showing courage and commitment.
