Sen. Michael Bennet announces 2020 presidential run

Colorado Senator Michael Bennet has announced he is seeking the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential election.

Sen. Bennet made the announcement on Twitter Thursday morning.

Bennet originally planned to announce his campaign in April before being diagnosed with prostate cancer. Bennet underwent a successful surgery and is now cancer-free.

He is the 21st democratic candidate to enter the primary race. Among the Democratic candidates for president is former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a long-time colleague who hired Bennet as his chief of staff when he was elected Denver mayor in 2003. Bennet later became the superintendent of the Denver Public Schools in 2005.

He was appointed senator of Colorado by then-governor Bill Ritter following the resignation of Ken Salazar, who left to become secretary of Interior in 2009. Bennet was then re-elected to the Senate in 2010 and 2016.
