Security video shows heavily armed robber in Pueblo Dairy Queen

A man was heavily armed when he robbed a Dairy Queen for cash and tried to carjack a customer and employee Monday night.

Security camera footage obtained by KRDO shows 37-year old Levi Roberts, dressed in black and wearing a bandana, walking into the Dairy Queen on Oakshire Lane holding two handguns and carrying a third in his waistband. This occurred around 9 p.m. Monday night.

“I was changing the ice cream and the girl behind me told me we are being robbed,” said Ashley Torres, an employee at the Dairy Queen in the Belmont neighborhood of Pueblo. “He had the gun in my face asking me to give him all the money.”

After giving receiving the cash, Roberts unsuccessfully attempted to steal a vehicle in the drive-thru, according to Pueblo police. Afterward, police believe he fled the scene. When officers, arrived they searched the area but could not find him.

Two hours later, employees found Roberts hiding behind the restaurant when they were closing for the night. Roberts made a second attempt to steal a vehicle. This time, employees say he was armed with a gun in one hand and a machete in the other.

“He came right at me,” said Amanda Gilmore, the assistant manager at the fast food restaurant. “I wasn’t giving up my keys though.”

Roberts came up empty-handed again and fled on foot into nearby prairies. Using night vision goggles, police were able to find him and make an arrest, the department said Tuesday.

“He ran and after a short foot chase we were able to place him into custody,” said Sgt. Frank Ortega with the Pueblo Police Department. “Who knows if we would’ve found him out in those prairies without those night vision goggles.”

Roberts is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of attempted robbery.

Ortega says Roberts is originally from Idaho, and hopefully, this will be his first and last crime spree in Pueblo.

“He looks like a psycho,” said Gilmore when she looked at the Roberts’ mugshot. “Honestly, I’m glad he didn’t hurt anyone.”

At this time, it’s unclear if any of the three guns in Robert’s possession were loaded.

There have been a number of robberies in this neighborhood. Employees at the Dairy Queen recall at least three robberies in recent years, while the Loaf N’ Jug directly across the street was robbed by two gunmen just last October.

Police aren’t exactly certain why these spots are being targeted, but the employees at the Dairy Queen believe the nearby prairies might have something to do with it.
