UPDATE: The Pueblo County Coroner has identified the man shot and killed by Pueblo officers after a conflict early Saturday morning.

The coroner said Daniel Gurule was the suspect involved. He was 31-years-old and from Pueblo.

PREVIOUS STORY:

The incident started on Friday night when a Pueblo police officer conducted a normal traffic stop near Lake Avenue when they discovered the driver had an arrest warrant out for a traffic related offense.

The driver stepped out of the vehicle momentarily but proceeded to speed away losing the officer.

In the process, the suspect minorly injured the officer, hitting him in the knees with his vehicle. The officer is okay.

Later that evening the man was tracked down in a home on the 1200 block of Bohmen Avenue. Officers tried to contact the man.

A nearby neighbor, Patsy Gutierres said, “they kept telling him to surrender to come out of the house with his hands up and that they would guarantee his safety.”

From there, the SWAT team was deployed and tried to negotiate with the man, but he would not cooperate initially. He eventually came out around 3:30 a.m. with a gun in hand, pointing it at several SWAT officers.

Nathan Mayer, another neighbor was watching the standoff from his window. He said, “when they blew his door open. It shook my whole house. It shook the whole house. I’ve never heard anything that loud before.”

In response at least 8 officers opened fire on the 31-year old man, he died at the scene. No officers were harmed in the confrontation.

Sargeant Frank Ortega with the Pueblo Police Department explained, “they did a SWAT call out and negotiated with him for several hours. At some point, he comes out, and he was shot.”

All eight officers who opened fire have been put on administrative leave. The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation.
