Affidavit: Driver told investigators his brakes failed before deadly crash on I-70
New details have been released Saturday in the fiery crash in Denver that killed four people.
Rogel Aguilera-Mederos is believed to of ran his out of control semi into traffic Thursday afternoon.
The crash claimed the lives of at least four people. The arrest affidavit for Aguilera-Mederos states those people are “unidentifiable and unrecognizable.”
Aguilera-Mederos was in court Saturday, a judge set his bond at $400,000.
His attorney said he’s suffering from survivors guilt.
“He`s in deep sorrow. He can`t eat, he can`t sleep. This is by far… by far the worst thing that has ever happened to him,” Robert Corry, Aguilera-Mederos’ attorney said.
The affidavit said witnesses captured video of the semi before the crash speeding past a runaway truck ramp.
Documents said Aguilera-Mederos told investigators his brakes failed on I-70 and his emergency brake didn’t work, which made him drive on the shoulder.
Aguilera-Mederos also said he “closed his eyes” before the crash because he, “thought he was going to die”.
Corry was asked why his client didn’t’ use the ramp, he said he couldn’t discuss that with the ongoing investigation.
“I don’t want to jump to any conclusion except to say there must have been some malfunction we’ve seen videos of fluid coming out of a truck, we’re not sure if it’s this truck, but it may be,” Corry said.
Aguilera-Mederos is now awaiting charges in Jefferson County Jail. Aguilera-Mederos is a Cuban national and is working in the U.S. with a green card. The judge did find probable cause to arrest him Saturday.
Aguilera-Mederos is expected back in court next Friday for advisement on any charges that may be filed.
