UPDATE: Mother allegedly stabbed kids before driving off bridge
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking into an alleged child abuse case after a woman allegedly stabbed her two children and then drove off a bridge Sunday night.
The Otero County Sheriff’s Office gave an update Tuesday saying the woman is suspected of stabbing her daughters at their home in Manzanola early Sunday and then leaving with them in her SUV.
The crash happened on Highway 207. The 33-year-old mother, who hasn’t been identified, was going northbound at the Arkansas River Bridge when the SUV left the road and went into the river. (MAP)
A passerby saw the SUV and called emergency responders who rescued the girls, according to the CBI.
Two girls, aged 8 and 10, were sent to the hospital after the crash. CBI says the mother of the children was found outside of the vehicle. All three were seriously injured.
“How did that happen? How did we let that happen? Manzanola is not big. There’s no way someone could be doing that to their kids and us not find out,” neighbor Lupe Polvón said.
Polvón lives across the street from the mom’s home, her daughter is in the same class as one of the girls.
“I never thought that was going on,” Polvón said.
It wasn’t until Sunday morning when law enforcement vehciles packed her street Sunday morning that Polvón was alerted, wishing she’d noticed more.
“All I want is for people to realize you know as a neighbor, check up on your neighbors, even if you don’t know them,” Polvón said.
The Otero County Sheriff’s Office and the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office are investigating what led up to the crash along with the CBI and local authorities. CBI says because the allegations involve possible child abuse, information will be limited.
No arrests have been made at this point.
