Marty’s Snowy Saturday Morning Forecast – 2/23/19

Today: Snow will end early along the I-25 corridor with blowing snow and slick travel likely for a few hours after sunrise. Snow will continue to accumulate over the plains of eastern Colorado for several hours this morning with some areas east of highway 71 between Limon and La Junta receiving an additional 3″ to 6″ of snow before noon. We expect wind gusts over 40 mph at times for areas east of I-25 today. The combination of wind and snow will lead to near whiteout conditions periodically over the plains of eastern Colorado until the wind begins to wind down gradually this afternoon. The sky will clear from west to east through the day with all areas under a sunny sky later this afternoon. High temperatures will reach the 30s and 40s for the plains with 20s and 30s over the mountains with the wind putting a bite into the air for much of the day.

Tonight: The wind will continue to decrease and the sky will remain mostly clear. With the fresh snow on the ground over much of the area we should get pretty chilly by morning with low temperatures in the single digits and teens.

Extended: We expect periods of cloud cover and cool conditions Sunday and Monday with some wind at times but the air should gradually warm into the 40s and 50s by Monday afternoon. Tuesday should be a breezy and warm day with high temperatures in the 50s and 60s for the plains, mainly 40s to lower 50s for the mountains. A shallow layer of colder air should knock temperatures back into the 30s and 40s for the plains of eastern Colorado on Wednesday but the mountains shouldn’t cool as much. The cold front on Wednesday does not appear likely to produce any significant precipitation over the area, but some areas along and east of the mountains may become blanketed by low cloud cover and patchy fog or freezing fog. The wind should swing around off of the mountains on Thursday blowing the cold air eastward and allowing temperatures to warm back into the 50s and 60s over the plains. Thursday night and Friday look to be windy as another cold front moves over the state. Friday looks to be much colder with a chance for some snow again.
