‘Miracle on Ice’ scoreboard coming to Colorado Springs’ Olympic museum

On the 39th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice,” when the U.S. Olympic Hockey team defeated the defending champion Soviet Union, the U.S. Olympic Museum announced that the original scoreboard over that famous game will be moved to Colorado Springs.

The scoreboard was replaced in 2017 at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York. It’ll soon be housed at the Springs’ new Olympic Museum, which is slated to open in 2020.

It was back in 1980 that the U.S. Hockey team pulled the stunning upset in the medal round over the Soviet Union, which had won the previous four gold medals in Hockey. Team USA won 4-3.

Despite the historic victory, that game didn’t secure a U.S. championship. The team went on to defeat Finland for the gold.

The $85 million facility will feature interactive displays and exhibits about Olympic and Paralympic athletes and events, and include a walkway over railroad tracks that would link the museum with America the Beautiful Park.
