Marty’s Sunday Morning Forecast – Calm Before The Next Winter Storm – 2/17/19
Today: Cool and less windy for all areas, although we’ll still be a bit breezy as the afternoon wears on. We expect increasing clouds during the afternoon and spotty snow showers may begin developing over our local mountain areas by very late in the day. High temperatures look to reach the 30s and 40s for the plains with 20s and 30s over the mountains.
Tonight: Much colder air will settle over the area tonight bringing a good chance for snow to much of the area. Snow should become fairly widespread over the Pikes Peak Region by around midnight and then expand over much of southern Colorado through daybreak. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings go into effect tonight and remain in effect for many parts of our coverage area through Tuesday. With temperatures falling into the teens for many areas any snow that falls will quickly whiten area roadways leading to slick travel for many for the morning commute. Snow will also fall over the high country with the heaviest snow over the southern mountains.
Extended: Snow will probably be heaviest over southern parts of our coverage area Monday morning, then decrease in coverage and intensity for many areas during the day although scattered snow showers will remain possible. We expect many of our heavily populated areas between Colorado Springs and Pueblo out east along the Arkansas River to receive between 1″ and 4″ of snow through Monday morning with pockets of heavier snow possible over and near the mountains in the Pikes Peak Region and especially to the south and southwest of Pueblo where communities along the southern I-25 corridor such as Walsenburg and Trinidad may receive between 3″ and 6″ of snow. Snowfall accumulations of greater than 8″ appear possible over the Wet and Sangre De Cristo mountains through Monday morning. Heavier snow may also fall over the plains in a band along and south of the Arkansas River.
A second wave may re-intensify the snow Monday night into Tuesday causing additional accumulations of snow before the weather begins to clear. We will be chilly both Monday and Tuesday with high temperatures likely only in the teens and 20s so even light accumulations of snow are likely to whiten roadways and slow travel across the area. Wednesday should be mostly sunny and cool. The rest of the week looks to remain cool with periods of cloud cover, less wind and possibly some scattered snow showers over parts of the area.
