Suspect arrested in connection to Big R robbery in El Paso County

A suspect was arrested near Airport Road Thursday in connection to a burglary at the Big R store off Gahart Drive in El Paso County.

The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Strategic Investigations Unit and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms took a man into custody in which they originally offered a $5,000 reward for his arrest.

The man was caught on camera Sunday around 6:11 in the morning using an ax to smash through a locked gun case to steal 13 handguns from the store. At the time of the crime, he was described by authorities as being a white or Hispanic man wearing a black ski mask, black coat, black gloves, a black and white checkered belt, and black boots.

After an investigation, officers came in contact with his vehicle, in which he attempted to back away from officers and hit a fence on Airport Road. His vehicle then proceeded to hit another vehicle traveling westbound.

Officers were able to catch up with the man and arrested him without further incident. There were no serious injuries, however, an adult female was transported to the hospital for observation.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the suspect is not being identified at this time.
