Fort Carson soldier killed after being found with another soldier’s wife
Colorado Springs police say a 20-year-old man has been arrested for a second-degree murder after a shooting that happened Saturday near Airport Road and Murray Blvd.
Police arrested Pfc. Isaiah Towns shortly after 23-year-old Spc. Shakir Cook-Troynel died from a gunshot wound.
Cook-Troynel was a soldier stationed at Fort Carson and was originally from Homestead, Florida. According to Fort Carson, Cook-Troynel had served as an indirect fire infantryman in the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment over the past nine months.
According to an arrest affidavit, Towns suspected his 27-year-old wife was cheating on him, so he went to her home and heard sexual noises coming from the master bedroom. She had told him earlier that day that she wanted a divorce.
Towns told police he went to the bedroom and found his wife mostly nude, and Cook-Troynel was in the closet with the door open, according to the affidavit. Cook-Troynel and Towns’ wife had previously been in a relationship and had a child together.
Towns told police he had a pistol and that his intention was to “frighten and intimidate Cook-Troynel to get answers.”
Towns’ wife began yelling at him and asked what he was doing there and tried to push him out of the room. During the struggle, Towns’ pistol discharged and Cook-Troynel was hit in the upper torso. Towns then ran outside, tossed the gun toward a dumpster and fled, according to the affidavit.
Police caught up with Towns later and interviewed him. That’s when he confessed to shooting Cook-Troynel.
Towns is also a soldier stationed at Fort Carson, though that status may change based on this investigation. Throughout his year and a half military career, he’s received the Army Service Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal. He’s currently being held in the El Paso County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Fort Carson says Cook-Troynel was “instrumental in the success of the unit and he made a lasting impact on our formation and everyone whose life he touched.”
Troynel’s death is the 31st homicide in the city so far this year.

Colorado Springs police are investigating after a man was shot and killed early Saturday morning.
Police responded to the scene in the 400 block of South Murray Boulevard shortly after 2 a.m. where they found a man inside an apartment who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Violent Crimes Section has taken over the investigation. The death is considered homicide and is still an active investigation.
