Democratic candidates tour Colorado ahead of Midterm election
With less than a week until Colorado’s Midterm election, political candidates are working overtime to meet with as many voters as possible. On Friday, several Democratic contenders including gubernatorial nominee Jared Polis joined a statewide bus tour traveling all across Colorado.
The bus made a stop in Colorado Springs. When the bus pulled up candidates were greeted to cheers from left-leaning voters. Democrats running for Secretary of State, State Treasurer, Congress and more, all participating in the tour.
Grace Sweeney-Maurer, who is running against El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder says she and others are facing tough races and events like this tour can make a difference.”I think this is very important because we do not want to be a forgotten part of the state,” says Sweeney-Maurer.
Another Democrat in a difficult race is Stephany Rose Spaulding. She is going up against Congressman Doug Lamborn who has held the seat for more than a decade. She says talking to the public ensures that their voices will be heard. “Oftentimes, candidates that have been in office for awhile, they tend to take the voters for granted,” Spaulding says, “I’m excited the democratic party is collectively coming across to meet constituents where they are.”
Democrats have a lot to gain in this election. If they are voted into the five open state senate seats, Colorado’s legislature would have a Democratic majority. Meaning their plans for health care and gun control could be fast-tracked. Gubernatorial nominee Jared Polis says that may not be the best thing for Colorado. “There’s good ideas and there’s bad ideas on the left and the right,” Polis says, “I hope that whoever is elected to the Colorado state senate, Republicans and Democrats, put their values and put good ideas above simple partisanship.”
The bus tour will continue its trip around Colorado until election day.
