Fatality reported following accident involving pedestrian in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs police responded to a fatal car accident involving a pedestrian early Monday morning.

The crash happened after midnight Sunday, at the intersection of Astrozon and South Academy. A woman was struck by the vehicle while crossing the street.

Officers found the woman lying in the roadway. Emergency crews immediately tried to save her life but she died on the scene. The roadways remained closed for a few hours following the crash.

The driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Elizabeth Bennett, was taken into custody. There was also a passenger in the vehicle. Bennett and the passenger were not injured.

Bennett is facing charges of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of a suspected drug.

Lt. Howard Black with Colorado Springs Police Department said a man was hit by a car and killed at this exact same intersection last week. Black says all of these accidents can be avoidable if you pay attention.

This is the 42nd traffic fatality in 2018.
