New K9 joins Fountain Police Department
There’s a new K9 patrolling the streets of Fountain.
K9 Phoenix was donated to the Fountain Police Department in May by Shield 616 and Four Corners Canine.
He spent the summer training with his handler, Officer Jon Kay, and started his first official day of work September 3.
Phoenix is a two-year-old Dutch Shepherd with a dual purpose: find narcotics and apprehend suspects.
“We trained on obedience, narcotics searches, building searches, and apprehending suspects 40 hours a week for three and a half months,” Officer Kay said.
He was practically born for the job: many of his family members also work in law enforcement. Some of his siblings are K9s for the Denver Sheriff’s Office and some are trained to detect bombs for the federal government.
Officer Kay said Phoenix is a quick learner who is highly motivated by tennis balls. The two continue will continue training every day during work.
“We have to make sure he stays edgy and sharp,” Kay explained.
Kay is ecstatic to be partnered with the Shepherd, as he’s wanted to be a K9 handler for years. He is especially grateful to Shield 616 and Four Corners Canine for the donation.
Phoenix is the second K9 for Fountain Police. He joins Amp, who is trained to detect marijuana.
