Fremont County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested, facing multiple charges

UPDATE 5:20 p.m.

Sheriff James Beiker said this morning he couldn’t discuss the circumstances revolving Pape’s arrest but mentioned the details will come in time.

Christopher Pape was working as a detective when the investigation started. He had just been promoted to a marijuana enforcement officer but didn’t get a chance to fulfill those duties before he was taken into custody by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s office on Friday.

The PCSO started their investigation in late May after Sheriff Beiker was tipped off that Pape might be involved in wrongdoing. Beiker said he immediate called Sheriff Kirk Taylor to get involved.

Sheriff Beiker said, “because of the careless acts of a small few or one do reflect on them, it reflects on me, it reflects on all of law enforcement.”

Beiker also admitted it’s been a rough year for the department. Former detective Robert Dodd is going to trial after being accused of holding evidence inside a personal storage locker from the murder of Candace Hiltz.

Just over a year ago, several deputies were put on leave for a variety of reasons, but it drew scrutiny from the public. Beiker told media this morning, “Our agency has suffered a great deal in the last year and a half. This is just disturbing for all of us and most certainly for the citizens of this county.”

Pape will go before a judge next week to formally be read his charges. He is administrative leave with pay, but Bieker said that is only until a formal internal investigation can begin when the PCSO finishes their criminal investigation.
