Bridge in Colorado Springs dedicated for Pearl Harbor survivor
The bridge over Interstate 25 at Fillmore Street in Colorado Springs is being named for one of the five remaining survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack.
The sign was put up Friday for Gunner’s Mate Second Class Donald G. Stratton’s newly dedicated bridge, and more than 200 people showed up for the unveiling.
Stratton served through December 1945, but he said Friday’s dedication was about keeping the memory alive of those who died.
“When the signs go up on the highway, I hope everybody that passes gets a good glimpse and it reminds them of the sacrifice that the people did to make this possible,” Stratton said.
Stratton also gifted a wooden flag to Joe Ann George Taylor, the daughter of U.S. Navy veteran Joe George. George rescued Stratton and five other sailors from the USS Arizona after the bombing at Pearl Harbor.
