Victim hangs onto back of stolen jeep, dragged several hundred yards
A Colorado Springs man wouldn’t let thieves get away with his father’s SUV easily when he jumped on the moving vehicle and confronted the suspects late Wednesday night.
Several suspects broke into a garage on Revelstoke Drive and stole a Jeep Liberty, according to police. As the suspects were driving away, the man’s son who was already sitting outside jumped onto the driver’s door hoping to stop the criminals.
The resident was dragged for several hundred yards until the Jeep turned south on Wolf Center Drive and he fell off. The victim’s father who didn’t want to go on camera told KRDO he suffered a broken arm and is currently being examined for brain injuries.
A nearby neighbor, Jennifer Owens thinks she may have caught something on her surveillance camera. Just after midnight, a truck is seeing going down the street but not coming back. Twenty minutes later, a police car is seeing coming down the same road. It was law enforcement responding to the crime.
What doesn’t match is where the victim let go of his father’s car. Owen’s camera is signaled by light and movement. Another car isn’t seen in between the truck and a police car at 12:24 a.m. She thinks it might have happened one block East of her.
Neighbors in the area say they aren’t surprised a car theft was reported nearby. Elisabeth Fast said, “we’ve had a lot of theft and auto theft, people breaking into garages, stealing stuff out of the garage, stealing cars out of the garages.”
The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating the incident. They have not returned our calls for comment.
