CSFD Reminder: Fireworks illegal in Colorado Springs
As Fourth of July approaches, the Colorado Springs Fire Department is reminding the public that fireworks are illegal to use or possess in Colorado Springs.
All types of fireworks with a fuse and/or requiring a flame for ignition are illegal within city limits. Possession, use and/or sale of fireworks is subject to a fine up to $2,500 and/or up to 189 days in jail. A fire started by fireworks that damage or threaten properties is a crime of arson.
Novelty items like snappers and poppers are allowed. Professional public firework displays are regulated and permitted upon approval from the Division of the Fire Marshal under the city code.
CSFD fire investigators will conduct fireworks patrols on July 3-5. They will confiscate any fireworks that are found and issue citations to those in possessing the fireworks. There are also drop-off boxes for fireworks at all 22 fire stations around town. The community is encouraged to voluntarily bring in their fireworks for proper disposal. The drop-off is anonymous and no citation will be issued.
How to report illegal fireworks:
If you hear or witness the use of fireworks being used by a neighbor, call 719-444-7000. Only call 9-1-1 in the event of an injury or fire. When you call either of the numbers, ALWAYS stay on the line until a call taker answers.
