Suspect in New Mexico homicides shot by Fort Morgan police

A suspect wanted for a double homicide in New Mexico was shot by Fort Morgan police officers outside of a Walmart Thursday morning.

Police identified the suspect as 31-year-old Dustin Brian Montano of Sterling. He was flown to Loveland Medical Center and is in critical condition.

Fort Morgan police said the suspect was armed and suicidal at a Walmart at 1300 Barlow Road. The man left the store and went to his vehicle when Morgan County Sheriff’s Office deputies confronted him.

The man made a “threatening gesture and was shot by the deputies,” according to the Fort Morgan Police Department. No law enforcement officers were injured.

Fort Morgan police said Morgan County Sheriff Jim Crone and Undersheriff Dave Martin were the law enforcement officers involved in the shooting.

Little information was given about the double homicide, with Albuquerque police only saying two people were found dead, according to the Associated Press.

The shooting is under investigation.
