Colorado Springs Airport under construction ahead of travel season

As travel season picks up, so will the number of people hitting the Colorado Springs Airport. That’s why airport officials are working on making repairs and scheduling new projects.

Don’t worry, they don’t expect construction to affect your travel plans. They say all flights should remain on schedule.

But changes are coming. Millions of dollars are being invested in construction — $15 million to be exact. And it’s all going into projects like repairs from April’s fire.

More than a month later, the affected area looks a lot different, making it hard to even realize a fire tore through much of the second and third floors.

Those repairs are expected to be done by Thanksgiving, but that’s not all. The airport’s Director of Aviation, Greg Phillips, says they’re also working on routine maintenance and renovations.

“We have three runways so we never are 100 percent shut down. We’re always able to have more than two runways open, even if we’re doing construction on one. This time, what we’re doing right now this summer, is work on one of our taxiways where we’re constructing the concrete pavement,” Phillips said.

Keeping the taxiway in tip-top shape is extremely important as it carries the weight of several planes weighing around 150,000 pounds, according to Phillips.

The taxiway and several other projects are expected to continue into next year.
