Pueblo teachers’ union putting new deal to a vote
The Pueblo Education Association is expected to vote on the latest contract offer from District 60.
The two sides came together Saturday to discuss the offer that could put an end to the teacher strike.
While things seemed to be going well at the beginning, arguments got heated between union and district officials. At one point, the District 60 team walked out, but returned.
Both groups debated over the third offer presented to teachers. Educators were offered a two percent retroactive COLA for six months, a $500 one-time stipend for paraprofessionals and 3.25 percent COLA moving forward. Stipulations that the union wanted. However, the union also wants teachers who were on strike for the last five days to get paid.
The district also claims they do not have enough funds to do everything the union wants. They say it will put them in the negative. Union leaders say that is not true, that the district does have the money but they aren’t willing to pay.
Union members are expected to place their votes Saturday night. The union plans to make an announcement on Sunday.
