Day 2: Evidence links suspects to Colorado Springs auto shop for murder
On Monday, prosecutors continue to build their case against two suspects in the murder of a Colorado Springs shop owner. January 29th marked day two for the evidence hearing as attorneys tried to link Eric Grant and Derrick Davis to the killing of George Maldonado Sr., the owner of Full Throttle Auto Service.
KRDO NewsChannel 13’s Cinthia Maldonado talked to the victim’s family as they go through this grueling ordeal.
“We miss him!”
For two days and about 10 hours of testimony; a Colorado Springs family has had to relive the brutal murder of beloved father, son, and brother, George Maldonado Sr.
“I wish this would [have] never happened to him. He was a good guy, he didn’t deserve this,” says Martha Maldonado.
The defense attorneys are raising courtroom theories that have outraged his loved ones.
“I know that they are trying to defend them. They want to dig dirt on my brother that he was bad,” says Theresa Maldonado.
The defense team claims George Maldonado Sr. was targeted for selling the prescription painkiller Percocet but prosecutors counter-claimed saying he was targeted for the large amount of cash he kept in a safe.
“Everything the defense attorney is trying to do and say I know everybody that knew by brother knows different. They know he all around was a good guy.”
Monday in court prosecutors showed cell phone data; info that showed the two suspects were in the area the morning of the murder and for several days leading up to the fatal robbery.
“What we’ve seen through video and heard from witnesses, we already feel there’s enough probable cause.”
For the first time they learned details of the autopsy. “That’s what we were not looking forward to, listening to.”
George Maldonado Sr. died of a blunt force trauma to the head. The autopsy revealed no signs of gun shot wounds or bullet fragments.
Meanwhile for the Maldonado’s, “They deserve to be taken away from their loved ones for life,” the end of the case can’t come soon enough.
The evidence hearing is not over yet. Defense attorneys did request more time to review some new evidence presented in court. Because of that, we won’t hear from the final two witnesses in this pre-trial until February 8th.
