CSPD plans for series of weekly ‘safety tips’ videos on Facebook

Colorado Springs Police taking to Facebook, telling you how to protect your mail from being stolen. As KRDO NewsChannel 13’s Cinthia Maldonado tells us, the new safety videos have become crucial, as the department deals with a crime trend that’s truly on the rise.

“We have a neighbor here asking about a package, mail. Passports. More mail.”

On a daily basis Angelina Mitscke comes across ‘missing mail’ posts on her neighborhood Facebook group, “Rather important documents like passports other stuff they bought online,” says Mitscke

Angelica lives in the southeast part of the Springs, she says porch pirates and quote-unquote missing mail is putting some neighbors on edge.

“There’s a lady on the Facebook group who posted about three times that the bank mailed her the same stuff three times and that it never arrived.”

Although, day-to-day mail mix-ups do happen, Colorado Springs Police Officer Sid Santos says mail theft is becoming more common.

So he’s using Facebook to provide tips on how to prevent lost or stolen mail.

“To remind people to take their mail out in the evenings and put it out in the mornings so it’s not out there through the evening,” explains Officer Santos.

Springs Police say thieves usually take your mail at night. “If it’s something important, something valuable, or personal information, make sure to take that to the post office.”

And officer Santos adds, it’s also about preventing identify theft.

“Any personal information that is going to be leaving the house. So rather than placing it in the trash can; to shred it so that nobody can use that information for criminal activity.”

Mail theft won’t be the only topic police address on Facebook. Colorado Springs Police says it has plans for a series of weekly videos to give out tips on a variety of safety topics.
