Pueblo police say gunshots were fired during a pursuit of a suspect after a domestic violence incident Monday night and one person is dead.
According to a KRDO photographer at the scene, police were called to a domestic violence incident on the east side of town but the suspect fled. The suspect hasn’t been identified at this time.
Police said Tuesday that the suspect was outside his ex-girlfriend’s home in the 2600 block of E. 9th Street and was firing a gun into the air. When police arrived, he got into his SUV and fled, going west.
Officers chased after the suspect to the area of 13th and Craig streets, where a PIT maneuver was performed to stop the vehicle. He then took off on foot, and that’s when the suspect fired shots at officers, police confirmed. The officers then fired back, killing the man.
No officers were hurt in the shooting.
“I started hearing a lot of gunfire so I ducked. It sounded like a machine gun at first and after that went away I started hearing police shooting,” said Ronald Olson. “About 10 seconds, it was all over and it got really quiet.”
Pueblo police spokesperson Brandon Beauvais confirmed the fatal shooting and said a thorough investigation will be conducted by the Critical Incident Team. He added that video from the officers’ body cameras will be collected as evidence.
Multiple Pueblo police officers and a Colorado State Patrol trooper were on scene through the evening.
This is a developing story. KRDO will update this article when more information is available.
