Air Force Academy cancels athletic events in wake of gov. shutdown
The far-reaching tentacles of Friday night’s government shutdown reached sports on Saturday, as the Air Force Academy announced the cancellation of all future athletic events.
The Air Force Academy released the following statement on the situation ” Due to the government shutdown, all Air Force Academy home and away intercollegiate athletic events have been cancelled until further notice. In the event a solution is reached, the Academy will work to reschedule as many missed events as possible.”
On Saturday the Air Force men’s basketball team was scheduled to face Fresno State, while the hockey team was slated to finish their weekend series with Sacred Heart.
We reached out to both universities – while Fresno State had no comment, Sacred Heart released this statement on the situation:
“We are spending our day preparing as if the game will be played tonight. We still plan to travel on our regularly scheduled flight late tonight. We are in communication with Air Force Athletics and will work with them to accommodate any changes that they need. We are aware of the significance of the situation, but are focused on the things that we can control.”
Navy and Army are both expected to continue their athletic schedule as-planned because – while being affiliated with their respective military organization – they don’t use government funding, unlike the Air Force.
