11,000 Colorado civilians potentially impacted by government shutdown

More than 11,000 civilians who work at Colorado military installations could be without work if the government shuts down at midnight.

If shut down, Fort Carson and Schriever Air Force Base could potentially lose half of their workforce. At Fort Carson, of their 6,000 employees, 3,000 are civilians. At Schriever, 4,850 of their 9,490 employees are civilians.

Peterson Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station have 2,521.

The Air Force Academy reported 1,000 jobs could potentially be furloughed if shut down.

Meade Warthen, the spokesperson with the U.S. Air Force Academy says, “Access to healthcare services will be affected/delayed. Severe impact to Family Health, Pediatrics and Surgical services. Patients will be referred off base for these services. Other areas impacted to lesser degrees.”

Senators have until midnight to make a decision.
