Door-to-door scam circulating in Colorado Springs

An old scam is re-circulating in Colorado Springs impersonating Century Link employees.

Here’s how it works

A man or woman usually shows up at your doorstep trying to sell or offer some kind of service to get access to your home. They’ll usually ask you questions to find out information when you will be home or learn easy access point into your home with the intention to come back and steal from you.

“Always feels shady when you realize that maybe someone isn’t who they say they are,” said Sean Shepard.

This happened to Shepard’s wife last week.

“My wife said someone came to the door, he was wearing a polo, but it didn’t necessarily have any branding on it,” he said. “He started initially being overly friendly…but it was to a point where it was uncomfortable.”

Shepard said he claimed to work for Century Link and Comcast and was asking to ‘repair cables’.

“It was really frustrating,” he said.

Unlike email and phone scam, these door-to-door thieves usually live in the area. Det. Jon Price, with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office explains if you have any suspicion take the time to verify their identity.

“No authentic repair man is going to be offended if you take the time to call the company and just verify his identity before letting him in and giving him personal information,” said Det. Price.

This scam can be executed in a number of different ways. If it’s not a repair man, it could be an offer for a free home inspection, or even a tree trimming service.
