CSPD investigating after woman dies days after being taken into custody
Colorado Springs police are investigating after a woman died after being in custody.
Police said officers arrested Erica Klag, 40, Tuesday night during a traffic stop near Academy Park Loop and Academy Boulevard on a warrant for failing to appear on traffic charges.
Klag told police she was going to have a seizure. Officer requested medical response , police said and Klag did not have a seizure.
After being taken into custody at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center, she went into cardiac arrest. She was then taken to Memorial Hospital where she died on Thursday
An investigation by CSPD Violent crimes showed while in custody, CSPD and EPSO use minimal force to restrain Klag. This included handcuffing, a spit sock being placed over her head due to her attempts to spit on officers and escort holds to stop Klag from thrashing.
Police said Klag had several baggies of methamphetamine on and inside of her.
Police said there is no indication so far of any excessive force by officers, but the investigation is ongoing.
